Siān Phillips Award 2005: Dave Berry

The recipient of the Siān Phillips Award 2005 is Dave Berry, author of the bible of Welsh film, Wales and Cinema - The First Hundred Years published in 1994 by the University of Wales Press. Born in Farnworth, Lancashire, he moved to Wales in 1974 and was film critic for the Cardiff-based evening paper the South Wales Echo from 1978 to 1994. He wrote and devised the 1986 HTV film history series The Dream That Kicks and became Research Officer at the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales. Dave Berry is one of the most respected champions of film in Wales and is credited as one of those instrumental in bringing the lost 1918 film The Life Story of David Lloyd George to light. He is Associate Lecturer in Welsh Film History at the University of Wales Lampeter and co-editor with Professor Simon Horrocks of David Lloyd George The Movie Mystery. The award was presented to Dave Berry by the well-known writer, broadcaster, historian and Visiting Professor at the University of Glamorgan, Professor Peter Stead.
