Cyfrwng Conference 2008
The Cyfrwng 2008 Conference was hosted by Aberystwyth University and held at the National Library of Wales on the 1-2 May 2008. The conference theme, 'Convergence: New Platforms', encapsulated the intellectual rationale for Cyfrwng – bringing together academics, politicians, policy makers and professionals from the fields of radio, television, film, new media, journalism, theatre and performance.
The conference was opened with a keynote address by Ceri Sherlock, BBC Wales Commissioning Executive for Arts, who suggested that "Too many people are worrying about the future and not enough are inventing it". Other conference highlights included a panel discussion on the screen adaptation of Caryl Lewis's award-winning novel Martha, Jac a Sianco, and a conversation between Professor Elan Closs Stephens and Euryn Ogwen Williams about the pace of change within the industry over the last decade.
The first day's activities came to an end with Alwyn Roberts, former Chair of the BBC's Broadcasting Council for Wales and one of the first members of the S4C Authority, presenting the Cyfrwng 2008 Award to Owen Edwards, the first Director of Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C), in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of mass media in Wales. The conference Dinner then followed in the National Library of Wales's Council Room.
The next Cyfrwng Conference will take place at BBC Cymru Wales's Broadcasting Centre in Llandaff, 7-8 May 2009.
